A Garden and Library

"If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need." ~Cicero~

What a beautiful quote!

Gardening and reading are two activities that can bring peace, tranquility, contentment, and happiness to our lives.

Gardening and reading are great stress-relieving activities.

The Journal of Health Psychology first published in June, 2010 information regarding a field experiment conducted by the Wageningen University and Research Center in The Netherlands showing the stress-relieving effects of gardening.

A group of thirty gardeners performed a very stressful task. They were then randomly assigned to a period of 30 minutes of outdoor gardening or indoor reading. Their salivary cortisol levels were then measured and they self-monitored their moods. It was found that gardening and reading each led to decreases in cortisol during the recovery period after the stressful task. The decreases were significantly larger in the gardening group. Positive mood was absolutely fully restored after gardening, but deteriorated during the reading period. These findings provide us with the first experimental evidence that gardening can promote relief from acute stress.

While the weather is still cold in many places, and it is too cold to actively garden, we can easily combine these two activities by at least reading about gardening!

How are you preparing for your new garden?
